The 1st Michał Spisak National Polish Music Competition took place in the Zagłębie Palace of Culture in Dąbrowa Górnicza from 19 to 25 September 2006. It covered three musical categories of stringed instruments i.e. viola, violoncello, double bass. The competition was open and addressed to musicians who were under 29 years of age.
The Honour Patronage of the 1st Michał Spisak National Polish Music Competition was held by: Marshal of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland - Marek Jurek, Rector of the Karol Szymanowski Music Academy in Katowice - prof. zw. Eugeniusz Knapik and Mayor of Dąbrowa Górnicza - Jerzy Talkowski.
The competition organisers were:
- City Hall of Dąbrowa Górnicza,
- Zagłębie Palace of Culture in Dąbrowa Górnicza,
- Music Schools' Group in Dąbrowa Górnicza,
and the Karol Szymanowski Music Academy in Katowice, which provided content-related supervision over the Competition.
The Artistic Director of the Competition was Dean of the Vocal-Instrumental Department at the Karol Szymanowski Music Academy, prof. Zygmunt Tlatlik, who also was the Deputy Secretary of the Jury, whose Secretary was prof. Leon Markiewicz.
The 1st Michał Spisak National Polish Music Competition was commenced with an Inaugural Concert, during which the Chamber Orchestra of Zagłębie Dąbrowskie conducted by Tadeusz Mazurek performed pieces composed by the Patron of the Competition:
- 3 short compositions for small orchestra of 1949,
- Suite for string orchestra of 1945,
- Aubade for small orchestra.
Before the Inaugural Concert in the Art Gallery of the Zagłębie Palace of Culture there was a vernissage of the exhibition dedicated to Michał Spisak, based on the collection of the Main Library of the Karol Szymanowski Music Academy in Katowice and the City Museum in Dąbrowa Górnicza. The author of the exhibition was Grażyna Brewińska. The exhibition could be seen from 19 to 30 September 2006.
The Competition was in three rounds. The 3rd final round - was with the accompaniment of the Chamber Orchestra of Zagłębie Dąbrowskie. The competition auditions of all the rounds were open to listeners and music lovers.
The concerts and auditions were hosted by Grażyna Brewińska.
The 1st National Polish Competition finished with the Laureate Concert, which was on 25 September 2006 in the Small Concert Hall in the Zagłębie Palace of Culture. During the celebration the laureates received prizes, diplomas and commemorative medals.
